BYD submits application for Tang L model, equipping identical potent engines as Han L counterpart.
The Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled its latest offering, the Tang L SUV, which boasts a unique and powerful powertrain configuration that sets it apart from other electric vehicles and BYD's own models.
The Tang L SUV utilises a plug-in hybrid powertrain (DMP hybrid), combining a 1.5L turbocharged engine with dual electric motors, producing a combined output of up to 640 horsepower. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just under 4.3 seconds, making it one of the fastest three-row SUVs in its category.
The SUV also features BYD’s Blade battery technology, providing an electric-only range of about 125 km (77 miles), while the combined hybrid range exceeds 1,000 km. The Tang L offers all-wheel drive with intelligent torque vectoring and multiple drive modes optimised for various driving conditions.
The rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant of the Tang L specifically includes a 100.5 kWh LFP Blade battery, delivering an impressive 670 km CLTC range on a single charge. It supports BYD’s 1000V charging platform, allowing ultra-fast charging at rates up to 1000 kW with dual gun simultaneous charging. The vehicle can charge from 10% to 70% in just 6 minutes and achieve a full charge in under 30 minutes.
In comparison, the BYD Han L Sedan, also in the latest MIIT catalog, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, as indicated by "2.7S" on the rear. The Han L sedan focuses on all-electric propulsion with high output and even faster acceleration in performance variants, but with a more traditional sedan form factor and different range/charging characteristics.
The Tang L SUV is included in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's latest catalog of models for public comment. The public can submit their feedback on the Tang L SUV between January 11-17.
BYD has filed a regulatory document for the Han L model, and recently, the V8s motor, unveiled by X on Twitter on December 28, 2023, has a maximum horsepower of 578 PS and a peak power of 425 kW. However, the Tang L BEV in the catalog has a single-motor version with a peak motor power of 500 kW, but acceleration information is unknown at this time.
In summary, the BYD Tang L SUV offers a versatile layout—both as a hybrid and a pure EV—with a distinctive blend of performance and range unusual for a three-row SUV. Its hybrid version balances a strong turbocharged engine with electric boost for extended range and spirited acceleration, while the EV version emphasises ultra-fast charging and long-distance capability. The Tang L’s unique powertrain and performance highlight BYD's strategy to blend hybrid and electric technologies to meet a variety of user needs in the large SUV segment.
