BYD Overtakes Tesla as Global EV Sales Leader in 2025

BYD has taken the lead in global electric vehicle sales for the first time, surpassing Tesla in the first three quarters of 2025. This marks a significant shift in the stock market, with BYD selling nearly 400,000 more vehicles than its rival.

BYD's success can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the company's sales volume is significantly larger, with about four million vehicles sold worldwide compared to Tesla's 1.8 million. This includes both battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV). Secondly, BYD dominates the Chinese market, with over 54% share, and has maintained strong growth despite price competition and market maturation. While Tesla leads in pure BEV sales, BYD's diverse product range and lower prices have proven appealing to a wider range of customers.

The shift in leadership comes as Tesla faces stock market concerns. A group has called on investors to vote against Elon Musk's $1 trillion bonus, citing questions about the future growth of sales. Musk's bonus is contingent upon achieving ambitious targets, including 20 million cars sold, 1 million robotaxis, and 10 million subscribers to the FSD autonomous driving system. BYD, on the other hand, has benefited from the support of the Chinese government and favorable conditions within the country.

BYD's global market share is set to reach 15.7% by the end of the year, solidifying its position as the new industry leader. The company's success is due to its low prices, wide range of models, and expansion into European and South American markets. This is the first change in leadership in the electric vehicle market in the past decade, signaling a new era in the stock market.
