Almaty.tv, citing inAlmaty.kz, has reported that the city's public transport now offers free Wi-Fi.

Currently, 450 buses have equipment installed for internet connectivity, with plans to equip a total of 1,000 buses by mid-October.

Timur Nurtayev, head of TOO EZ Wi-Fi, noted, "With the pandemic, we recognized the essential role the internet plays in our lives. It bridges us to knowledge, and now it's available for you on buses. I've seen how people in other countries utilize this commute time to kickstart their workday. Maybe, one day, Almaty will mirror that scene. Our aim is to make wireless internet freely accessible on all public transport. To connect, locate the network EZ Wi-Fi in your settings, click connect, and voila, you're good to go!".

Twenty-five routes from companies including "Almatyeletrotrans," "City-Bus," and "Oljas LTD" already offer internet connectivity. As the project progresses, buses equipped with Wi-Fi will show special stickers.

An interesting tidbit: the network needs to be reconnected every 15 minutes.

The free Wi-Fi project in Almaty's public transport is initiated by employing technologies from the Ukrainian company eWi-Fi and is managed through networks of two Kazakhstani operators.

While some details may not be disclosed yet, it's worth noting Kazakhstan's efforts in expanding public Wi-Fi infrastructure, thanks to operators such as Freedom Telecom. They have already covered significant locations in the country and are aggressively pushing to extend this service nationwide[1][2]. However, it's unclear at this time if eWi-Fi plays a role in the implementation of Wi-Fi in Almaty's public transport.

In similar schemes worldwide, users typically select the Wi-Fi network, enter essential information, or accept terms of service to connect. Session duration might vary depending on the transport's duration or be subject to provider-set limits. Local telecom operators usually oversee the infrastructure setup, maintenance, and service provision. More specific details about Almaty's public transport Wi-Fi will be available as the project unfolds. So, get ready to catch up on emails, stream your favorite tunes, or browse social media as you ride the city buses!
