Boeing 777X Delayed to 2027, Lufthansa Adjusts Flight Plans
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has confirmed that the 777X program is running behind schedule. The delay could lead to a significant financial charge and has prompted German airline Lufthansa to adjust its flight plans. The 777X program, which includes the 777-9 variant, was initially expected to enter service in 2020. However, it has faced numerous setbacks, pushing the entry into service to 2027. Ortberg acknowledged the delay on September 11, stating that the company is working to resolve the issues. The delay may force Boeing to record a charge of between $2.5 billion and $4 billion. This announcement came after certification tests were suspended in August due to a defective part. Despite the setback, Boeing's stock rose by 0.45% in electronic exchanges following the announcement. Lufthansa has started preparations to remove the 777X from its flight schedules until 2027, reflecting the delayed deliveries. Boeing is currently in a 'quiet period' before its third-quarter results release and could not comment further on the delay.
