BMW's Electric Future: M3 & M4 Models Go Electric by 2028
BMW's electric future is taking shape, with the carmaker extending the current M4 model cycle and revealing plans for electric successors of the M3 and M4. However, details about an electric M4 remain scarce.
BMW is keeping the current M4 on the market until June 2029, a nearly nine-year run. Meanwhile, the M3 sedan's production is set to end in February 2027, making way for an electric successor in March 2028. The new combustion engine M3 will follow in July 2028.
The next M3 will offer both combustion engine and fully electric drive options, but BMW is yet to confirm if the first fully electric M model in 2028 will be an M4. The company is also evaluating the future of combustion engine 4 Series models, including the M4.
A new electric BMW i4 is planned for production from July 2028 to October 2036. The M3 Touring (G81) is expected to be in production until October 2027.
While BMW's electric plans for the M3 are clear, the future of the M4 remains uncertain. The carmaker is extending the current M4's cycle and evaluating the future of combustion engine 4 Series models. BMW's first fully electric M model is expected around 2028, but whether it will be an M4 is yet to be confirmed.
