BMW officially announces the name of the upcoming i3 Sedan during the unveiling of the iX3.
BMW is gearing up for an exciting few years, with a plethora of new models set to debut. One of the most anticipated additions to the lineup is the BMW i5, the first electric sedan of the brand's new Neue Klasse lineup, which is expected to appear before the next-generation 3-Series model.
The i5 sedan is not the only electric vehicle on the horizon for BMW. The iX3, an electric crossover, has already made its world premiere, and its sedan sibling, internally known as the "NA0," is still camouflaged and will debut later in 2026. This sedan will arrive before the next-generation 3 Series. Spy shots suggest that the iX3 sedan and the next-generation 3 Series will look nearly identical.
BMW CEO Oliver Zipse confirmed the name of the i3 during the iX3's world premiere. The outgoing i3 model is likely to be replaced by a longer i3 built on the Neue Klasse platform. Interestingly, BMW sells an i3 sedan in China, based on the long-wheelbase 3 Series, locally assembled.
The iX3 is not the only electric vehicle in BMW's plans for China. An extended iX3, scheduled for release in summer 2026, has already been teased.
Spy photos also suggest facelifts for the 7 Series and 5 Series are in development. However, there might not be another gas-powered 3 Series wagon, despite earlier reports of a "G51."
BMW is not stopping at sedans and crossovers. The next-generation X5 and X7 will gain electric versions for the first time. The company is planning to release more than 40 new or updated models by the end of 2027.
The i3 is not the only model to get a Touring version. The i3 will have a Touring version, internally known as "NA1." The i3 Touring, like its sedan counterpart, will be built on the Neue Klasse platform.
In conclusion, BMW's future is electric, with several new models set to debut in the coming years. The i5 sedan, iX3 sedan, and the next-generation X5 and X7 are just a few of the exciting additions to the lineup. Stay tuned for more updates as these models make their way to dealerships.
