Bitkom President: Digital Tech Key to Europe's Climate Goals
Bitkom President Achim Berg has underscored the crucial role of digital technology in achieving Europe's climate change goals. Speaking ahead of Germany's EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, Berg called for a digital focus in the upcoming European climate protection law.
Berg highlighted the potential of Industry 4.0, sensors, and intelligent machines in reducing energy consumption in industries. He also proposed that 3D printing could save resources in production and video conferences could help cut emissions by reducing business trips.
Berg suggested that half of the EU research program subsidies should be allocated to digital solutions. He emphasized the importance of considering digital transformations in industry, energy, agriculture, and transport for a Europe-wide climate-friendly shift. Berg called for targeted investments in low-carbon technologies and reliable incentives for sustainable business practices.
Berg's statements come ahead of the EU Commission's proposal for a European climate protection law on March 4, 2020. With Germany holding the EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, Berg's digital focus could influence the law's final form. The article is available for download as a PDF.
