Countdown to Biometrics: Airlines Chasing Ease at Russian Airports

Gear up, travelers! Biometrics could soon be the new normal for air travel, with a potential adoption by 2028-2029 – and major hubs like Moscow's Sheremetyevo leading the charge.

Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Artem Dzhambulatov, recently shared his predictions about the future of biometrics, emphasizing the balance between convenience and system reliability as the primary challenge in its widespread use.

Dmitry Ilyin, the deputy director for information technology at JSC "International Airport Sheremetyevo," hinted at the possibility of barrier-free biometric passage to the pre-flight security zone in most Russian airports by 2029-2030. They're in the midst of testing cabins for passage without paper documents, following which certification and implementation will commence.

ültiple sources earlier reported that passport control modules for passenger biometric passage could debut at Vnukovo Airport as soon as July 2025.

Insights:As of 2025, Russia is already committed to biometric requirements for foreign nationals, with digital pre-registration and data collection playing a significant role. At major airports like Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo, travelers must now undergo biometric screening (face photo and fingerprints) and the new QR code system for visa-free entrants. The rules have been in effect since December 2024.

For more details:Russia has been aggressively integrating biometric technology into its entry processes. Since December 2024, foreign travelers arriving at Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports have faced biometric screening. As of mid-2025, these airports require both facial and fingerprint scanning, along with the new QR code system for visa-free entrants. The pre-entry digital application and QR code requirement was then set to kick into full swing for all Russian entry points starting June 30, 2025. Children under 6, as well as visa and residence permit holders, are exempted from these new rules.

Technology plays a significant role in the integration of biometrics into air travel, with the testing and implementation of biometric screening systems at Russian airports.

By 2029-2030, it is anticipated that travelers will be able to pass through pre-flight security zones in most Russian airports using barrier-free biometric passage, thanks to advancements in technology.
