Bavaria Proposes Drone Police to Shoot Down Threats After Munich Airport Disruptions

Munich Airport and other locations across Germany have experienced drone sightings, leading to flight cancellations and stranded passengers. The responsible parties remain unidentified, sparking discussions about enhanced security measures and the potential creation of a drone police in Bavaria.

Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder has proposed that police should have the option to shoot down drones when other methods fail. Currently, police can attempt to verify, control, or disrupt drones electronically, but shooting them down is legally and technically challenging due to lack of necessary equipment.

The Bavarian government is introducing a bill to expand police powers to react to drone threats. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt plans to create a joint federal drone countermeasure center involving multiple authorities. The German government suspects Russia of being behind recent drone flights, although the Kremlin has denied involvement.

In response to these threats, the Bavarian government is prioritizing the protection of the population and territory. A new drone competence and countermeasure center for the Bavarian police will be established in Erding.

The Bavarian government is taking steps to enhance security measures against drone threats. With the introduction of a new bill and the establishment of a drone countermeasure center, Bavarian police will be better equipped to handle drone incidents, potentially including the option to shoot down drones when necessary.
