Autonomous trucking takes a step forward with demo from Continental and Aurora, entering level 4 of operation.

In a significant development for the autonomous trucking industry, Aurora Innovation and Continental have announced a partnership aimed at high-volume manufacturing of autonomous trucking systems. This collaboration is expected to revolutionise the transportation sector, with the goal of making the unit economics of the Aurora Driver compelling for long-term business success.

The future Aurora Driver is designed to deliver customer value for one million miles, a testament to its reliability and durability. The innovative dual engineering approach taken by the companies is intended to reduce the exposure of the main and fallback system to single points of failure, ensuring a safe and efficient autonomous driving experience.

Moia and ZF Friedrichshafen, two key players in the automotive industry, are set to start series production of autonomous vehicle hardware for 1000 autonomously driving trucks by the year 2027. This production is expected to take place in Hamburg, initially covering parts of the city center and HafenCity.

Aurora's goal is to make the Aurora Driver a reliable, serviceable, and cost-efficient system for mass production. To achieve this, they are working closely with Continental's engineering team to provide an industrialized fallback system for the Aurora Driver. This fallback system, a specialized secondary computer, can take over operation if a failure occurs in the primary system, ensuring a smooth and safe transition.

This partnership marks a significant milestone towards commercializing autonomous trucks at scale. Aurora Innovation and Continental have finalized the design and architecture of the Aurora Driver, an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving system. This achievement brings us one step closer to a future where autonomous trucks become a common sight on our roads, offering increased efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
