Austria's Nationwide Siren Test Demonstrates New AT-Alert Digital Warning System
Austria's nationwide siren test is underway, accompanied by a new digital warning system called AT-Alert. This innovative system, developed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), sends text messages to mobile phones logged in to the affected areas.
AT-Alert uses 'Cell Broadcast' mobile technology to transmit messages. This allows authorities to send regional or nationwide warnings via mobile network operators like T-Mobile. The system is a supplementary measure to the existing nationwide siren warning system, introduced last year. During today's siren test, AT-Alert is being broadcast nationwide to demonstrate its capabilities and familiarize the public with the new warning method.
The BMI, which developed the AT-Alert technology, has integrated it into Austria's mobile networks. This ensures that even without an internet connection, mobile users within the affected area will receive crucial information during emergencies.
The nationwide siren test and AT-Alert broadcast today serve as a reminder for Austrians to stay informed and prepared. The new digital warning system complements the existing sirens, providing an additional layer of security and communication during emergencies.
