Fake QR Codes on Parking Meters Trick Drivers - Augsburg Warns of Parking Meter Scam as Fake QR Codes Target Drivers
Augsburg's parking meter machines have been targeted by criminals, with fake QR codes used to steal payment data. The city is now conducting checks to remove any fake stickers.
Last year, scammers shifted their focus from electric car charging stations to parking meters. In Augsburg, criminals have tampered with the machines, covering official QR codes with their own stickers to direct users to fake websites. This method, known as 'QR code overlaying', tricks users into entering personal data, potentially leading to financial loss or identity theft.
Similar scam attempts have been reported in other German cities such as Hannover, Cologne, and Dortmund. In Munich, a driver fell victim to a similar trick, signing up for a fitness subscription instead of paying for parking. While the police and local authorities have warned about these scams, no concrete names or organizations have been publicly identified as responsible for these attempts.
Augsburg is now checking all parking meter machines to remove any fake stickers and ensure the safety of users. Drivers are advised to be cautious when using QR codes for payments and to verify the authenticity of the payment portal. As of now, it is not known if any parked drivers in Augsburg have fallen victim to the scam. Authorities urge anyone who suspects they have been targeted to report it immediately.
