Artificial Intelligence Summaries Revive in iPhone News Applications, Albeit with a Cautionary Note
Apple has brought back the AI notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in its latest operating system update, iOS 26. This update, announced at the June Worldwide Developers Conference, aims to provide useful and relevant intelligence while ensuring user privacy.
To enable AI notification summaries, users can navigate to Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications. Upon selecting this option, they are taken to a new page with three categories: News & Entertainment, Communication & Social, and All Other Apps. If users choose to enable AI notification summaries for all categories, the button will read Summarize All Notifications.
When updating to iOS 26, users are asked for various permissions, one of which is for AI notification summaries. It's important to note that users will have to select their preferred categories again when turning the summaries back on.
The update also includes a new Liquid Glass redesign. However, there is a warning in the News & Entertainment category that summarization may change the meaning of the original headline and users are advised to verify information.
In January, Apple had disabled AI notification summaries for news and entertainment apps due to concerns about accuracy. The BBC had pointed out in December that the feature twisted the media organization's notifications and displayed inaccurate information.
Tapping the categories in the AI notification summaries page will trigger the Summarize Selected Notifications button on the bottom of the screen. To turn off AI notification summaries, users can tap the Summarize Notifications toggle in the new menu.
In addition to the reintroduction of AI notification summaries, iOS 26 also includes call screening and hidden features. The update also comes with a guide on reducing the Liquid Glass effects in the update, a guide on enabling call screening on an iPhone, a link to a review of the iOS 26 operating system, and a link to an iOS 26 cheat sheet.
Apple released iOS 26 on Monday, bringing a host of new features and improvements to iPhone users.
