Apple Broadens DIY Repair Solutions to Include Mac Laptops
Apple has made a significant step forward in empowering customers to repair their own devices, announcing the expansion of its Self Service Repair program to Mac notebooks with M1 chips.
Starting August 23, 2022, in the US, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro owners with M1 chips can take advantage of this initiative. The program offers more than a dozen different repair types for each model, including display, top case with battery, and trackpad.
To start the Self Service Repair process, customers must first review the repair manual for their product on support.our website/self-service-repair. Once they have familiarised themselves with the procedure, they can visit the Apple Self Service Repair Store and order the necessary parts and tools.
For high-volume, professional repair operations, Apple provides a rental tool kit, designed specifically for these purposes. This kit will be shipped free of charge, and customers will have access to it for one week. For customers who do not wish to purchase tools for a single repair, Apple offers rental tools for $49.
Apple's Self Service Repair program is supported by a global network of more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers, which employ over 100,000 active technicians. In addition, there are more than 3,500 Independent Repair Providers with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training.
The program will eventually be available in additional countries, including Europe, although specific information about which European countries will be added over the course of the year is not yet available.
Every genuine Apple part is designed and engineered for each product, and undergoes extensive testing for quality, safety, and reliability. Customers can send replaced parts back to Apple for refurbishment and recycling, and in many cases receive credit for their purchase by doing so.
In the US, eight out of 10 Apple customers are located within 20 minutes of an authorized service provider. Genuine Apple parts and tools can be purchased through the Apple Self Service Repair Store.
