Anticipates Persisting Need for Growth in Automotive Software Solutions by Forvia
In the evolving landscape of the automotive sector, the necessity for software is expected to escalate, driven by the surge in electric vehicle deliveries and innovative electronic system development. This was stated by an executive from French supplier, Forvia.
As per Jean Lorchat, director of software as a product for Forvia based in Nanterre, France, the capabilities of the system have significantly enhanced over the past two decades.
"The connectivity in cars is now both financially and technically feasible," Lorchat remarked during an interview. He recalled his experiences from fifteen years ago in Japan attempting to link cars with the internet, which seemed unfeasible at the time. Today, he noted, "it's a given that your car will be connected in some way. People now expect it."
Cars have progressed to incorporate infotainment features and touch-screen displays. Moreover, electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles are further fueling the demand for software.
Forvia has made seven acquisitions in the past seven years, focusing on automotive software expertise and products. Lorchat manages the development of Forvia software products, from conceptualization to market launch.
Regarding EVs, Lorchat noted, "There's a greater need for software to control the electric powertrain," which consequently escalates software requirements.
However, the increase in software demand isn't solely due to electric vehicles, Lorchat added.
"Various factors contribute to this compounding effect," Lorchat mentioned. "If you're adding advanced features but they're not driven by the conventional mechanical or electrical components, then software assumes a more significant role."
Additionally, software engineers and designers must face extreme conditions in vehicle development. Cars travel through both incredibly hot and freezing environments.
"Conditions are quite extreme," Lorchat said. "We have to assess the risks and prioritize them based on their likelihood of occurrence. The safety objectives are embedded in each piece of software."
Forvia's acquisitions are strategically aimed at strengthening the company's automotive expertise, further stated the executive.
"In alignment with Forvia's strategic acquisitions, the company has focused on building its automotive software expertise and product offerings, as Lorchat leads the development of these products."
"Furthermore, the surge in electric vehicle deliveries, such as EVs, necessitates a greater need for software to effectively manage the electric powertrain, as Lorchat pointed out."
