Amazon Unveils Vega OS for Fire TV Devices

Amazon has unveiled Vega OS, a new proprietary operating system for its Fire TV devices. The first device to feature Vega OS is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which promises a responsive and efficient performance at a cost of $39.99.

Vega OS is designed to provide a fast and smooth user experience. Despite using less RAM, it allows apps to start up quickly. This is a notable improvement over the previous Android-based systems used on Fire TV devices. The new OS supports popular streaming apps such as Prime Video, Disney+, Netflix, YouTube, and Apple TV+. It also offers 4K resolution with HDR10+ for enhanced picture quality.

However, Vega OS does have some limitations. Sideloading is not supported, meaning users can only download apps from the Amazon Appstore. This is a departure from the Android-based systems used on other Fire TV devices, which allow for more flexibility in app installation. Amazon has confirmed that its other Fire TV devices will continue to operate independently, running Fire OS on the Android platform and receiving their own updates.

The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the only device currently running Vega OS. While it offers a responsive and efficient performance with support for popular streaming apps and high-resolution video, its lack of sideloading functionality may be a drawback for some users. Amazon has not yet announced plans to roll out Vega OS to its other Fire TV devices.
