Amazon Introduces Rapid Prime Delivery in Smaller Urban Centers, Rural Towns, and Remote Regions Throughout the United States
In a significant move to improve access to goods and services, Amazon has announced an expansion of its same-day and next-day delivery services across the United States. This expansion, set to reach over 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural areas by the end of 2025, will particularly benefit rural customers who often have limited product choices and delivery options.
Improved Delivery Speeds
Amazon has already seen a 50% improvement in delivery speeds since starting to scale its rural delivery network in 2023. The company aims to halve rural delivery times by 2026, making it comparable to urban areas. This expansion will cover tens of millions of customers across more than 13,000 zip codes, significantly expanding its rural footprint.
Economic Impact
The expansion involves creating more than 100,000 jobs, both directly at delivery stations and indirectly through Amazon Flex and Delivery Service Partner (DSP) programs. Each new station adds about 170 jobs, boosting local employment opportunities. Amazon's $4 billion investment shows a commitment to rural development, which is unusual since many logistics providers have reduced their rural presence due to high costs.
Enhanced Shopping Experience
Rural customers can now order fresh produce, meat, seafood, and dairy products for same-day delivery, merging these purchases with other Amazon items. This improves access to perishable goods, which are often harder to obtain in rural areas. Free same-day delivery for Prime members on orders over $25 enhances the shopping experience by providing convenience and savings.
Amazon's fast delivery speeds have helped its everyday essentials selection grow more than twice as fast as all other categories in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2025. Customers can find out whether their area offers same-day delivery by browsing online.
Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, noted that customers in both rural and urban areas will now have the same fantastic Amazon customer experience. Amazon is No. 2 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer's 2025 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America.
The expansion allows customers to shop Amazon's everyday essentials, a huge selection of affordable and speed-critical groceries and household items. Amazon is also investing more than $4 billion to triple the size of its delivery network by the end of 2026, further enhancing its service offerings.
