Alcoholic beverages in canned form, provided by Kingsland Drinks, are stored within a sealed carton container.
In the ever-evolving world of beverages, packaging plays a crucial role in showcasing products while ensuring sustainability. Several companies have recently introduced innovative packaging solutions that aim to improve the sustainability of various products in the market.
Kingsland Drinks, a leading player in the beverage industry, has been at the forefront of these changes. The company has invested in a world-class canning line with a capacity to produce 26 million cans annually, emphasizing the importance of this format within the wider Kingsland Drinks range.
Kingsland Drinks has also collaborated with MM Packaging to develop a fully enclosed, FSC-certified cartonboard format for canned wines and ready-to-drink cocktails. This format, which can hold either eight or twelve cans, features a perforated zip-tear around the middle for ease of use. The fully enclosed cases offer excellent protection in transit and a strong on-shelf presence for the cans.
Jo Taylorson, head of Marketing & Product Management at Kingsland Drinks, mentioned that cans represent a format with significant growth potential across wine, ready-to-drink cocktails, and low-alcohol beverages. Kingsland Drinks has previously introduced a bag-in-box format for its Campaneo wine brand, a move aimed to keep drinks fresh, offer value for money, and improve sustainability metrics.
MM Packaging's business development manager, Mike North, stated that the solution is sustainable, protective, and multi-functional. The new packaging solutions also aim to further Kingsland Drinks' transition into aluminium can formats and help MM Packaging expand on the beverage market.
Meanwhile, in the battery industry, Aagard and Energizer have produced a one-piece case for batteries, aiming to eliminate 2.5 million pounds of plastic from packaging. The one-piece case supports both stand-up pouches and hang-tab cartons and is a retail-ready solution. This innovation is set to help Energizer's batteries in transit and distribution.
In the realm of beer, Smurfit Westrock has provided Woodforde's with shelf-ready boxes for its beer. These boxes are designed to resist water damage and attract repeated purchases.
It's worth noting that the bag-in-box format for beverages, including wine, was originally invented by William R. Scholle in 1955. Scholle's invention involved a flexible bag inside a box to preserve beverages, including wine. This predates recent collaborations in the wine packaging industry.
The new packaging solutions are not just about branding and a premium look. They are about reducing waste, protecting products during transit, and providing a strong on-shelf presence. As the beverage industry continues to evolve, expect more innovative packaging solutions that balance sustainability, protection, and aesthetics.
