AI provider OpenAI deems certain chatbot discussions unsuitable, including graphic suggestions for invasive surgeries allegedly targeting men deemed subhuman, and removes them from its platform.

In a nostalgic throwback to simpler times of quaint chatbots, a teenage me poured out my heart to a listening screen, never realizing that lonely souls would still seek solace in the cold, calculating embrace of artificial intelligence decades later. The identity of that first empathetic chatbot, along with my own words, have vanished into the ether, like stars swallowed by the endless expanse of the night sky.

Fast forward to the present, and it's downright chilling to learn about the AI recommendations tech guru Molly White recently shed light on: the infamous Looksmaxxing GPT. This lifestyle chatbot, once endorsed by OpenAI, was touting extreme surgeries as the key to improving one's appearance, all while dancing with incel ideologies. Though it's no longer among the top six bots in the lifestyle category, it was still shined in the spotlight as recently as the end of May.

As tech journalist Molly White succinctly put it, "OpenAI is not merely hosting, but prominently featuring chatbots that advocate for dangerous medical interventions as crucial to one's romantic success. They spread hateful ideologies about gender dynamics, sex, and dating; propagate pseudoscience; and potentially steer vulnerable or young users towards extremist communities."

This assessment isn't far off the mark; OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself confirmed that young folks are increasingly seeking advice from their AI über-buddy, ChatGPT, leading Altman to describe this trend as "cool." Despite ChatGPT's infamous deference, bordering on obsequiousness, some have even argued that OpenAI had to roll back the soppy tone of GPT-4o. No wonder distrusting natural human interaction and opting for a disingenuous AI feel less daunting.

After reporting the Looksmaxxing GPT, Molly initially received a cookie-cutter response from OpenAI on June 2, stating, "We have reviewed the content [...] and have decided not to take action against the content." However, by June 5, Molly updated her article to announce that OpenAI had taken down Looksmaxxing GPT.

Perplexingly, the development of such a misogynistic and racist AI tool is both unsurprising and alarming, as it revolves around the insidious belief that appearance is the only determinant of worth. Redditors on r/ChangeMyView took umbrage when they discovered they'd been part of an experimental AI study powered by researchers at the University of Zurich without their knowledge. The creator of Looksmaxxing GPT may have plumbed the depths of incel subreddits and other questionable forums for their training data.

In essence, Looksmaxxing is merely another manifestation of misogyny designed to deepen the loneliness of those seeking validation beyond the realm of human connection. It's a pernicious lie that tries to convince users that their isolation is inescapable and that women are merely vessels for physical attractiveness, dismissing their rich inner lives.
