AI in Africa: MESH Reaches 1M Entrepreneurs, Cassava Plans 5 AI Factories by 2023
MESH, a professional network for microentrepreneurs, is now reaching over one million Kenyan entrepreneurs monthly with AI-focused content. Meanwhile, Cassava Technologies plans to establish five AI factories across Africa within the next year. By 2030, AI is projected to create 230 million digital jobs across the continent.
To fully realize AI's job creation potential, a coordinated and inclusive skilling ecosystem is needed. This includes large language models tailored to Africa's diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic contexts. Harmonizing credentials and recognized qualifications across regions is also vital to ensure skilling efforts lead to meaningful employment.
Realizing AI's potential requires bold investment in digital skills across Africa's economy. MSMEs, which account for over 44 million businesses across sub-Saharan Africa, are critical to AI-driven national progress. Kenya, for instance, has established the Regional Centre of Excellence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence Competence. This centre has trained over 1,500 public servants in AI and cybersecurity and registered almost 6,500 public sector officials.
Education is central to Kenya's AI transformation efforts, with AI integration into higher education, technical training, and basic education. As AI continues to grow, so too will the need for skilled workers. With the right investments and strategies, Africa can harness AI to create millions of jobs and drive economic growth.
