AI Enhancement in Dresden: Reinforcing Progress in Artificial Intelligence
New AI Supercomputer "Elbjuwel" Set to Boost Regional AI Capabilities in Dresden
A new supercomputer named "Elbjuwel" is under construction in Dresden, Germany, by Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and ParTec AG. This local resource for AI computing power is set to reduce dependency on external news sources, particularly those in the USA and China.
Bernhard Frohwitter, CEO of ParTec, believes that providing computing power on-site is crucial for fully exploiting the potential of regional AI applications. He emphasizes that the platform will be a game-changer, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region.
One such demonstrator that will benefit from the new supercomputer's capabilities is the LOTTA intelligent drilling machine. This machine, used for integrating AI into production, is already being utilized by researchers in Dresden and the surrounding area.
The partners aim to create a platform for industry and research with the "Elbjuwel" supercomputer. This platform is designed to enable technological innovations by providing computing power for AI and related fields. By doing so, it may attract researchers and talents in the MINT field, further strengthening Saxony's position as a leading AI location.
Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, Scientific Director of HZDR, shares Frohwitter's optimism. He believes that the platform will give new impetus to the development of AI technologies and support companies in mastering the challenges of digitization.
The goal of the "Elbjuwel" supercomputer is to provide sufficient computing power for digital sovereignty in Germany and Europe. Initiatives like ProKI Dresden, which support SMEs in integrating AI into production, with a focus on metal forming, will benefit from the new platform.
With the new supercomputer, researchers in the region will have the opportunity to perform calculations and simulations on-site in the future. This access to AI for industry, SMEs, and scientific institutions may further establish Saxony as a leading AI location.
The "Elbjuwel" supercomputer will specialize in providing computing power for AI and machine learning, high-performance computing, and quantum computing. As such, it has the potential to become a magnet for researchers and talents in the MINT field, driving further advancements in AI technologies and digital sovereignty in Germany and Europe.
