AI App Market Matures: a16z's Top 50 Web and Mobile Apps 2025
The fifth edition of a16z's Top 50 Web and Mobile AI Apps has been released, revealing a stabilizing market with notable shifts in rankings and new entries. While some companies maintain consistent presence, others face challenges and changes in user preferences.
The 'All Stars' category, featuring 14 companies appearing in every list since 2020, remains unnamed in the search results. Meanwhile, the mobile list welcomes 14 new entries, largely due to app store crackdowns on 'ChatGPT copies'. The web list, however, sees only 11 new names, suggesting market stabilization.
AI Studio and NotebookLM, niche tools for AI enthusiasts, rank 10th and 13th respectively. Google debuts four products on the web list, including Gemini in second place, trailing behind ChatGPT. Notably, around 22 of the top 50 mobile apps originate from China, with Meitu being particularly prominent. Replit appears on the main list, while Bolt narrowly misses the cutoff in the 'Vibe Coding' category.
Three Chinese companies dominate the web top 20, generating over 75% of their traffic from China. The market shows signs of consolidation, with Grok surging to fourth place on the web and 23rd on mobile, boasting over 20 million monthly active users in less than a year. Conversely, Meta AI's growth slowed following an incident in June 2025, ranking 46th on the web and failing to meet the mobile threshold.
The a16z Top 50 Web and Mobile AI Apps list indicates a maturing market, with consistent performers and new challengers vying for user attention. As AI continues to evolve, so too will the apps that shape its future.
