Portugal's electric mobility market has been making significant strides in recent years, becoming a reference model for many European countries, particularly Spain. This growth is largely due to the competitive advantages and facilities available to charging point operators (CPOs).

The MOBI.E business model, a public entity in Portugal, plays a crucial role in this growth. Its mission is to promote and develop the electric mobility market, making electric vehicles accessible to all and enabling widespread adoption through infrastructure and support systems.

One of the key benefits of the MOBI.E model for energy marketers (eMSPs) is an expanded market where they can sell energy not only at public stations but also at private facilities. This model separates the functions of the energy manager and marketer, allowing CPOs to focus on managing the stations without high fixed costs associated with electricity supply.

The MOBI.E management platform establishes a direct connection with the energy sector, allowing the deduction of energy consumed in electric mobility from its total supply. This creates a specific electricity market for electromobility, simplifying the connection and power management of the stations, and allowing them to better plan their investments.

In Portugal, the existence of a single distribution network operator simplifies the process further. This, combined with the fact that CPOs do not pay for peak demand charges, allows them to install more high-capacity charging stations. Even in a low demand context, this acts as an incentive for operators to set up "refuelling" locations, as fixed costs are relatively low despite possible low utilisation.

The MOBI.E network, with over 5,209 publicly accessible stations and 9,124 available charging points, has seen a 66% increase in recharges in August compared to the same period last year, with 583,000 recharges. By the end of September 2024, more than 4,264,000 charging sessions had been completed.

Portugal now boasts more than 9,300 charging points, ensuring users have access to a station wherever they go. Transparency and accessibility are key points of the MOBI.E public company model. By being connected to their network, the stations allow both users and operators to be informed in real time about the availability, enabled power, and use of the chargers through their website, encouraging competition in the sector.

The focus in Portugal's electromobility market is on high power charging stations. In August, 77,774 megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy was consumed on the MOBI.E network, an increase of over 80% compared to the same month in 2023. The president of the public entity emphasizes that MOBI.E's goal is to ensure transparency and accessibility in the sector.

As Portugal continues to lead the way in electric mobility, its success serves as a beacon for other countries looking to develop their own electric mobility markets. The MOBI.E model, with its focus on accessibility, transparency, and cost-effectiveness, offers a promising blueprint for a sustainable and prosperous future of electric mobility.
