In a groundbreaking development, British outdoor clothing brand Vollebak has launched the Electromagnetic Shielding Bomber, a high-tech jacket that offers protection from electromagnetic interference and provides privacy in the increasingly saturated digital world.

The Electromagnetic Shielding Bomber is the result of a collaboration with German engineering lab Shieldex, known for creating advanced materials used in digital forensics, medical sensors, and satellite cloaking. The jacket's fabric is built with a silver-threaded shielding developed for NASA's Mars Curiosity Rover, making it electrically conductive and antimicrobial, thanks to the approximately 18% silver content.

The jacket's outer shell is made from lightweight ripstop nylon that has been metallised with pure silver at a molecular level. This unique composition allows the jacket to act as a wearable Faraday cage, shielding devices from wireless signals even when they are switched on. The Faraday cage effect blocks external static and non-static electric fields, creating a barrier that attenuates electromagnetic waves across a wide frequency range, from 0.2 GHz to 14 GHz.

This wide frequency coverage includes common wireless technologies such as 2.4 GHz Bluetooth, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and high-frequency radar. The jacket's shielding effectiveness is rated at 60dB, equating to a 99% attenuation of signals, providing a significant reduction in electromagnetic radiation reaching the wearer and their devices.

The jacket's design is inspired by the original MA-1 bomber silhouette, featuring a cropped cut, ribbed cuffs, and functional pockets. One of these pockets functions as a wearable Faraday cage, shielding a phone from being tracked, pinged, or hacked.

The Electromagnetic Shielding Bomber represents a potential step towards clothing that could offer protection beyond just the elements. Its innovative design and advanced technology make it a bold reminder of the future of fashion's need for protection as well as progress.

The Electromagnetic Shielding Bomber is currently available for purchase at Vollebak for a recommended retail price of £2,495/ $3,295/ AU$4,795.
