**Obituary: Turkish Aviation Pioneer Murat Ozturk**
Murat Ozturk, a trailblazer in Turkish aviation, tragically lost his life in a plane crash on May 19, 2013, during an acrobatic flight at Adana Airport. Born in Konya, Turkey in 1953, Ozturk's passion for flight would shape his life and leave an indelible mark on the country's aviation industry.
Ozturk began his career as a news cameraman at TRT, where his innovative spirit and adventurous nature led him to become Turkey's first sky reporter. His aerial photographs, capturing stunning vistas and significant moments, earned him numerous awards and recognition.
In 1985, Ozturk's love for aviation took a new turn when he started flying ultralight aircraft in Samandıra. This marked the beginning of his transformation from a cameraman to a pilot, a journey that would see him amass over ten thousand hours of flight time across dozens of different types of planes.
In 1993, Ozturk, along with Ahmet Tezman, bought a field in Istanbul and created Hezarfen Airfield, an initiative that would revolutionise general aviation in Turkey. Initially an earthen runway, Hezarfen Airfield was later upgraded with an asphalt runway and hangars, providing a safe and modern facility for aviators.
Ozturk founded Top Air Company, one of Turkey's first private pilot schools, where he trained countless aspiring pilots, including his daughter, Pelin Ozturk, who became an instructor pilot and flew with him at Top Air.
Ozturk's interest in aerobatic flights led him to perform with a S-2B Pitts type two-seater aircraft. His penultimate flight was in Adana Airport, where he participated in a show on the 19th of May Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day. Unfortunately, during this flight, Ozturk could not recover from a dive and crashed to the ground.
Despite his untimely death, Ozturk's contributions to Turkish aviation continue to be felt. His pioneering spirit, innovative ideas, and dedication to the industry have left a lasting legacy that inspires new generations of aviators. Rest in peace, Murat Ozturk.
