71 Neglected Cats Rescued From Deplorable PA Shelter, Director Charged

The Bucks County SPCA and Bensalem Animal Control have rescued 71 neglected cats and kittens from CATS Bridge to Rescue in Bensalem. The rescue was found in deplorable conditions, with the director now facing animal cruelty charges. In response, the SPCA is waiving adoption fees for cats in October and accepting donations for its animal relief fund.

The rescued cats are receiving treatment for fleas, ear mites, and respiratory infections. Tragically, two kittens succumbed to a highly contagious virus after being removed from the rescue. The director of CATS Bridge to Rescue will face charges for the chronic suffering conditions found at the facility, including trash, debris, animal feces, strong urine smell, flies, and fleas. The rescue planned to close its doors at the end of the month, but the neglect led to its early shutdown.

Pennsylvania's animal cruelty laws have a gap, as cat rescues are not licensed or inspected like dog kennels and animal shelters. This lack of regulation may have contributed to the neglect at CATS Bridge to Rescue. While there are no specific search results indicating which organization initiates new laws, the Bucks County SPCA and other animal welfare groups are advocating for changes to protect animals in rescue organizations.

The SPCA is urging the public to adopt cats in October, with all fees waived. Donations to the animal relief fund will support the care of the rescued cats and other animals in need. The case at CATS Bridge to Rescue highlights the importance of licensing and inspecting all animal rescue facilities to prevent future neglect and abuse.
