100-Meter Freighter Linked to Drone Sightings Raises Espionage Fears in Kiel
A 100-meter-long freighter, suspected of being linked to recent drone sightings near Kiel, has raised concerns about potential espionage and sabotage activities. The vessel, believed to be part of Russia's 'shadow fleet,' has been under scrutiny following damage to an undersea power cable and sightings of drones over Kiel in late September.
The Russian oil tanker 'Eagle S' was initially suspected of deliberately damaging the Estlink 2 undersea power cable by dragging its anchor across the Baltic Sea seabed. Although Finnish courts dismissed charges against its crew due to jurisdiction issues, investigations into possible links between drones and Russia's 'shadow fleet' in the Baltic Sea continue. In early September, another freighter, the 'Scanlark,' was searched in Kiel for suspected drone-related espionage and sabotage.
Experts believe that control over drones at such distances is technically possible, potentially with satellite support. The suspect ship in question had the capability to launch larger fixed-wing drones, unlike typical quadcopters. These fixed-wing drones have a larger wingspan and superior flight performance, making them suitable for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The suspect ship was sailing under the flag of a Caribbean state and was in proximity to the drones during sightings, further fueling suspicions about its involvement.
The 100-meter-long freighter near Kiel during the drone sightings may be linked to the events, with investigations ongoing into a suspected connection between these drones and Russia's 'shadow fleet.' The 'shadow fleet' is known for circumventing international sanctions and may be involved in sabotage activities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
